What is a Track Chair?

A tracked wheelchair is a track-based power mobility system that runs on a left and right side track instead of wheels. These tracks, along with the other features of the chair, give users the opportunity to venture on rough and rocky terrain. Although somewhat similar to an electric wheelchair, a track chair has some key distinct features that alter its function.

Track Chairs Have Tracks Instead of Wheels

Regular wheelchairs that are powered by humans typically have two points of contact to the ground: the front and back wheels. The back wheels are used to steer, whereas the front two wheels simply move in any direction and act as stabilizers for the chair. Likewise, a typical electric wheelchair has the same wheel set-up, but is powered by a motor. In the case of an electric wheelchair with a four-wheel-drive, all four wheels are used for steering, but there are still only four small points of contact with the ground.

In contrast, a track chair has an independent left and right track. These tracks increase the surface area of contact between the chair and the ground. While basic wheelchairs and electric wheelchairs have either two or four points of contact – typically around 3 square inches per wheel – a track chair with regular tracks have about two square feet of contact per track. The increased surface area allows for the track chair to travel through all kinds of terrain, which these other chairs cannot access easily – if at all.
